We've talked about it - now lets do it...

I am suggesting 20th, 21st - do the walk along the tunnels on the Saturday.
Get on the Razz at "the Logs" accomodation on Saturday night
Then on Sunday the Steam train will be coming north about midday and we can go watch it come out of the Mangaweka Tunnel at full tit which is always a thrill..

HOLY SHIT!!!

Step 1: Everyone dress in suits. I'll roll the double breaster with fedora.

Step 2: All pile into the newly wof'd '35 Austin 6

Step 3: Cruise at 40mph to the train.

Step 4: Ride steam train and giggle like school girls.

This is more about the mish to Mangaweka to check out the tunnels rather than the steam train ride which we will do another time

So whos keen and who ya bringing?

I can organise the accomodation fairly easily. http://www.rra.co.nz/accommodation_logs.htm
Do we need to ask the farmers or just risk it on the day?

As long as we get at least 5 or 6 of us it should be a good deal. $25 each for accom plus gas and supplies should be a cheap weekend..
Any alternative dates suggested?

I'm keen.
Do you reckon you could have a go at calling the jokers?
Also, repost that map. I'll email my brother it and get him to ask a few dudes at a remote, whole weekend pissup he's going to in taihape about the dealio.
would be dumb to go all the way there and not be able to see anything.

also, can I suggest we take this route? makes for some deviation to the monotony of state highway one.

it's a pretty sweet drive actually. there's a gorge toward the mangaweka end which used to be constantly a muddy slurry of slip waste hah.
it used to have no armco and be little more than a lane wide thrugh alot too until a couple of years ago.... the first time my sister drove that was in my 205 and she had lift off oversteer going in the wet. so scary! nutter.
but it's a nice drive, nonetheless. we could extend it by going down though apiti, and rolling gravel out through pohangina and coming out at ashhurst, where we could go and be lower than simon's corona.

Sounds lush as..

Will hafta leave Welly at 7am to be in Mangaweka by lunchtime cos it may take the whole afternoon to do the full mish walking and semi exploring the tunnels on the farm.
