full grids of f5000 is awesome

lols at 'historic' racing being quicker/awesomer/pulling bigger crowds/expensiver/bigger fields, than our current national 'premier' single seat race class. Must be abit dangerous with so many on the track... I wonder how long before one of the gentleman racers gets killed. Those things arn't exactly safe by todays standards.

They should re engine formula toyotas with those old pushrod toyota v8s. Or just move to formula libre rules. Keen to see Kenny Smith rip up in that Layton House, march F1 car he has in his garage/ he probably couldnt afford to put tyres on it let alone start the engine

The F5000 racing isn't exactly cut-and-thrust though is it. None of that classic racing really is. I mean it's fantastic to see them going wheel to wheel in brilliant old machinery, but you'll never see them doing the marginal 50/50 moves you'll see in modern motorsports which have easily replaceable parts/cars etc.

Of course there's always a risk but.

That was a sick race meet! absolutely loved all the cars there and especially the pit area. looking at all of the technology from back in the day was a blast. i took 551 photos so wont post them all but will put up a few once i sort through them  :-X  :D

almost wish i grew up in that era just for the motorsport!

Zealot

Wow, I hadn't realised the F5000s were that quick. I was under the impression that the TRS cars were still quicker.

I'm planning a daytrip on sat to Puke - missed the Hampton Downs one so I figure the pug build can be put on hold for a day to see them :D

Went to pukekohe yesterday. Was orsum as untill it started to rain :D

kenny smith was lapping in the 55's. Soooo fast. The atlantics were also pretty sweet, i havnt seen a big field of them before.

spent like a hour in the maclaren tent standing beside the james hunt f1 car beside steve millen waiting for the rain to stop but it didnt :'( so we went home

the norton single cylinder f3 cars were choice, as was the green citroen spyder thing

Went to Puke too, was sick. I dug the Mk I Cologne Capri, and race-bodied capri's that were there. Was talking to Neil who drove the Fleetwood Mustang, and he was talking about driving the Ferrari 275 down at Hampton Downs, followed by the McLaren F1... He's owned/driven some pretty quick cars before, but he said it completely blew his mind, apparently he was mentioning something about it having the race-spec 700hp GTR engine? Damn these lucky bastards....
