Hi
Just moved to Wellington from Chch and have been to peugeot specialists 4 times! and they still can't work out what the noise is coming from, first off they thought it was the guard rubbing on the tyre - so charged an arm and a leg to fix that, then the noise started again (it's very intermittent - but when it does it it is as annoying as anything), so took it back to Chch guys - they said it was the same and had come loose. Moved to Wgtn happened again, so took it in again and they said it was the same. Still doing it.... and now they reckon it could be the wheel bearing - but they're not sure, so have said it will be around $1400 to fix, but it might not fix it.
So my questions are: has anyone else had a sort of groinchy rubbing intermittent noise which sounds like it's coming from the front right but the mechanic reckons it's the left; and would my best bet be to get the parts shipped from the UK myself (or is there somewhere in NZ?), and should I pay to get it done if it's not guaranteed that it is the actual problem.
Sorry for long post + is this in the right forum??
cheers Leanne

This sure is the right forum - Welcome along!!! Good to have another 106 Rallye on here. I know exactly why you haven't given up, they are awesome little cars.  ;D

I personally haven't experienced something like this  :-\ so can't give you a quick fix without hearing it sorry. Is there certain times when it does it (speed/turning/accelerating/other)? Which specialists did you go to?

$1400 to fix a wheel bearing, I think they're having you on.  From the sounds of the work done to date, I'd call into a local garage and ask them to take the car for a spin...should'nt really cost anything.  Pity it's intermittent.

As PD said is it when your turning left/right or only when the car is full or accel or braking?  A wheel bearing would normally make a noise when turning one way or the other...

With the guard rubbing on the tyre, any marks on either the tyre or the guard?

thanks for replies.
yes there is rubbing marks on guard and wheel which is why they thought it was that - I guess.
no to certain times - does it at any speed - mainly noticed it on straight roads! we've driven it from Upper Hutt to the city and back with no noise and then another time it'll do it all the way.
specialists? armstrong peugeot - they seem to have some rallye fanatics working for them (both chch and wgtn want to buy it from me) so I thought they'd be the right people to take it to.

Hmmmm completely intermittent you reckon eh... It's not related to how much weight you have in the car at all? It's unusual not to have specific conditions where a mechanical problem pops up intermittently (Electrics are a different story!). Have you had the brakes checked? Almost sounds like you could have a stone or something stuck in the calliper but it moves around and occasionally rubs...

Typical! The guys who work there know how good Peugeots used to be and want a change from the boring modern models!!!  ;D
I haven't known them to be great at troubleshooting the way that independent specialists are though.

+1 to that.  Can anyone recommend a independent here in Welly?

No Pug specific one but Waiwhetu Auto is good apparently. Can't vouch for them personally.

I take my 106 to Powerhaus European.  I havn't had any cause to complain about them though they are well on the pricey side.

sister's 106 had dry cv joints which gave a similar noise. may be worth looking into. never seen it before. usually they'll click too. refilled with grease, no problems even 2 years on and it's done heaps of miles.

$1400 is taking the piss. they'll be quoting on "GENUINE" parts though.
I'm not sure on who to recommend in Wellington, sadly.
If you've got guard rub and they've fixed it more than once, what is the actual cause? if it keeps happening then I'd be very concerned.

hi there fellow rallye owner. im wrecking a tidy 106 xsi and you can have whatever you want (so long as its not plastic or rubber) for bugger all

sexyBerlingo

is like a rumbly noise? (kind of like the noise a rusty old wheel barrow will make when you push it around realy fast?) id say wheel bearing but I wouldn't realy know. Surely its a $140 job tho not $1400 haha

edit: 1400 is what i was quoted for a 205 cv joint lolz

Yeah CV is what I would have thought that kind of sound would be, but that's kinda obvious and you would hope that even the worst mechanic would pick up on a bung CV. Plus you tend to notice worn CVs more when turning and accelerating... Just to check Leanne - if you turn in a tight circle at full lock does it make rubbing/grinding/knocking noise?
If it's not that then could be the wheel bearing, though $1400 is stupidly overpriced. A wheel bearing would be what around $100 for the kit? If you're lucky you could get what you need off Thors xsi. What you'll pay the most for is the labour, Probably take a half day so you should be looking at $700-800?

re: the cv joints. sister's one didn't make any more or less noise when turning. weird as. the old boy took a few goes to find it, and he's a veteran diesel mechanic hah.

hopefully you work it out, though. I'd offer to have a look at it if I had any idea what I was doing lol.

That is pretty weird!
BTW how many miles (/km) has yours done Leanne?

could be inner joint tho? maybe not show up on tight circle turns
