There might be something not quite right here. It's pulls hard up to about 4500-5000 then runs out of puff. Doesn't seem to go above 5500 either, does it have a rev-limiter?

What should a 1.9 pug engine rev to?

One of the cylinders is turning the spark plugs black as well.
Oh well totally refurbished alternator is now in, all electrical problems gone

Changed spark plugs to new NGK BCRP6ES, with about a .88 mm gap. Should replace the leads as well.

I should put a disclaimer here. I have absolutely no experience with the mechanical side of cars. Even changing the plugs was a first for me.

Redline is 6k - but they run out of puff at about 5200rpm. No point going higher.
