Hey All,

Hey I'm Alex, I'm 19 and gave into my need for something boxy and french buying a Peugeot 309GTI off Trade Me and have joined to get some advice and inevitably find some parts.
It's done about 140k and has been almost entirely stripped out by the previous owner who was planning to take it hill climbing. He installed Baker BM silicon radiator and breather hoses and some GTI-6 brakes but apart from that it's pretty standard.

I have a question!
Percy has a lovely lumpy idle when cold, but seems to get a bit more frantic as his engine warms up. at 70 its at about 1800rpm and by 90 it can be as high as 2000rpm. I have heard that the Supplimentary Air Device can stick and you can unclog this? Thoughts on this would be appreciated, is this the thing I should look at first?

if you're thinking it's the SAD sticking open, warm the car up and then squeeze the rubber pipe between the SAD and the big rubber intake pipe. if the revs drop then it's a sure thing that your SAD is sticking open.
sometimes you can clean them out with a bit of carb cleaner and it'll help. others you need to find another one or go new (if you can even get them anymore??)
if it doesn't drop revs when that happens, it may have an incorrectly adjusted throttle cable or may need to idel turning down a little on the throttle body. sounds like the SAD might be the culprit though!

these little cars have a fairly simple injection system. once there's no vac. leaks and everything's set up right, they usually run pretty well!

I think anyone who has ever brought a 205/309's first post is ALWAYS about the idle! haha. There is also an idle adjust screw on the trottle body which can get blocked up. Take that out (remember to count how many half turns it took to get out!!!!) give it a clean then whack it back in....... Next CHECK FOR AIR LEAKS in the intake system. This is a super common problem which is often over looked....

Did you buy the carbs with the car or did he (Jesus??) sell them seperate??

^ if it's giving a high idle then it could be that the idle port in the throttle is blocked, and somebody has adjusted the idle with the butterfly stopper.

I reckon it's good practice to whip the throttle off any 8v that you've just bought to make sure everythigns clean. fully agree that most peoples first GTI posts are about idle issues lol. my first posts ever on pug forums definitely were!

I recently bought a 205 GTi (same engine as your car) and it idled consistently at 2000 rpm.  Been driving it to and from work recently and was starting to think I'll have to have a looksee, as a bit embarrassing sitting a lights with its high idle!

But it's fixed now.  Ended up doing an Italian tune-up 
Took it to Hampton downs on Tuesday night for a twilight track day and thrashed the living daylights out of it.......
Idles perfectly now - between 900 and 1000rpm

Not sure I would buy a car with a striped interior unless I was happy to leave it striped... unless he has all the panels and the clips aren't all fooked. They are simple enough though.

Just to let you know that my 1990 205 GTi has been running like a bag of bollocks for a while and recently was struggling at tickover these past few days. I'd put it down to the distributor cap and rotor arm at first, as the rotor arm was pretty worn and hadn't been replaced for a couple of years. Replacing made no difference and I'd previously taken advice about cleaning the SAD, posted here:

Anyway, that made no difference. But then reading other forums, a post in Aussiefrogs mentioned that one guy soaked his SAD in carby/throttle body cleaner overnight, so thought I'd take it off again today and be a bit more brutal. I sprayed loads through then put my finger over one end and sprayed from the other, which I think forced some crud out, as I've just taken it for a quick test drive and it seems to be behaving a lot better.

Thanks for the welcome & advice everyone! The pug is massive fun have ordered a higher temp fan switch (current one is full speed at ~70!?!) and was going to try your SAD and idle adjustment suggestions this weekend.

Unfortunately whilst parked at New Brighton yesterday a man accidentally *rammed* it in reverse. The bonnet, bumper, headlight, park light are all damaged and the bumper rubs on the front tire. RHS front wing more crumpled than the photo would have you believe. Was in the car and we were shunted about a metre backwards.

I've got the guys details any reccomendations on where to take it for someone to have a look at it, was thinking of just taking it to Laycocks??
